Call your shots

As I start filling up my little corner of the internet, I'm finding it helpful to untangle the ball of yarn that exists in my skull. So I've decided to categorize what I want to be working on in the next decade, and give each a name, so I can think about them clearly.

bryanking.net is a classic weblog. it's where i work with the garage door up and share behind-the-scenes stuff. nothing is off limits. if i get into knitting or cross-country skiing, and want to write about it, it goes here. if i want to write poetry or short stories, it goes here. links and scraps of thoughts, all go here.

Eyes of the World is a monthly personal newsletter, rounding up all the goings-on from my blog and life. A way to keep track of life as it goes by and sharing it with the world.

Serious Play is a weekly professional newsletter about prototyping practices for people who build software for a living. Prototyping will be a large focus for me in the coming years. At it's essence, it's what I'm good at, and I think it's never been a more valuable skill. I intend for this newsletter to spawn books and courses and workshops and consulting gigs (hopefully sooner rather than later).

Ultimately, I want to start an innovation consultancy.

Down the road (5+ years), I'll be launching Overbold: The Innovation Company. I am starting with prototyping in software because it's what I know. But that's a mere subset of all innovation, and ultimately that's what I want to be doing. Big projects for big names. The kinds of projects that Rory Sutherland writes about in Alchemy: making train trips 100% more pleasant rather than 2% faster. Innovation is not only technical, it's psychological, and uniquely human. Overbold will be a humanist innovation firm, available to solve the world's' problems in quirky, unexpected ways.

All of this will unfold over the next 10-20 years. A lot of work, no doubt. Beyond it?

Who knows.

But here I am, calling my shots.
