Too Much Vitamin D in the Diet May Be Just As Bad As Too Little

In a new study conducted by the Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, there is a very narrow gap between taking too much vitamin D or having vitamin D deficiency. In fact, taking too much vitamin D whether in supplement form or adding it to the diet might be more harmful to the health. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for better bone health and helps in the absorption of other nutrients. However, there is a hidden risk for those who take too much high doses of this nutrient. The new research from the Copenhagen University has also found a connection between cardiovascular deaths and vitamin D deficiency as well as too-high levels of vitamin D in the blood.

Many doctors have long taken to recommending vitamin D supplements indefinitely for patients with vitamin D deficiency. This is because although vitamin D is readily available from sun exposure, not enough is absorbed and not enough is also available from the regular diet. Thus, the new findings need to be given to doctors for proper attention. Many of the researchers were in fact, taken by surprise by this inverse in the curve of mortality for those taking too much vitamin D. This is because in the past, no findings ever came out about the serious consequence of taking too much of any vitamin. Also, past studies of people overexposed to the sun’s heat – and thus, absorbing vast amounts of vitamin D – did not see any rise in the mortality rate of these people.

When the researchers tracked the health records of more than 250,000 people over a wide range of ages between 2004 to 2012, mortality risk from cardiovascular events or stroke jumped twofold when vitamin D levels fell. However, when too much vitamin D was being taken in, mortality risks from the same causes jumped back up again. Thus, doctors and consumers are warned to be mindful of vitamin D supplementation over a long period for those with a deficiency. Maybe it’s more than enough to just have sun exposure once in a while and to bring in the vitamin through diet means.
