Tips to Prevent Emotions from Sabotaging Weight Loss

Based from recent survey that was conducted by more than 1,300 psychologists, they discovered that a person’s emotions can ruin his weight loss efforts. It’s because “emotional eating”, a person’s food choices and exercise commitment are the leading factors that determine a person’s weight. But the top obstacle is said to be the emotions that a person has during the time that he eats. If a person is stressed, is in a bad mood or depressed, he will eat more than he should and have bad food choices. This in turn can lead to weight gain. Although this might be the case, this effect can still be reversed. By following these methods, you can prevent your emotions from ruining your efforts to lose weight.

  • Develop self-awareness – Having a weight loss journal can help you overcome your emotional problems and succeed in dropping the excess pounds. It’s because there you can write down your realizations, hindrances, doubts, inspirational ideas and achievements. Once you have these things recorded, you can look back on all the issues that caused you to have problems with weight loss and you can look for solutions to these problems. Determine the root causes of these problems and start there to make sure that they won’t become worse and hinder you from losing weight.
  • Look for social support – There’s a lot of sources for social support such as; friends and family, inspirational books, online forums, affirmations, personal counseling and formal support groups. You need support from them to achieve a major change in your life like weight loss. If you are always receiving the motivation that you need, there is no reason for you not to achieve your goals in life.
  • Learn to distinguish self-soothing and self-care from one another – Are you always trying to soothe yourself by indulging yourself with foods inside the fridge? If that is the case, then you have deprived yourself of self-care. Caring for yourself means that you are conscious of your activities and food choices because you want to stay fit. If you are not mindful of the foods you’re eating and the things you’re doing, you have given more value to self-soothing than self-care which can be detrimental to weight loss. Let go of your bad habits and replace them with good ones to achieve your desired weight and gain permanent weight loss.
