Overcoming fear of the dentist
Your child is probably anxious at the thought of a stranger prodding and pulling his teeth with strange implements. The following tips may be helpful:
- Talk to your dentist and express your concerns.
- Stay with your child during his treatment.
- Encourage your child to ask questions about what may happen – this helps him feel in control.
- Explore relaxation techniques, hypnosis, psychotherapy, and acupuncture if your child develops a phobia about visiting the dentist. Check out the British Dental Health Foundation at www.dentalhealth.org.uk for more info.
