No Weight-Loss Benefit from
The results of several recent studies show that eating farmed salmon— whose plant-based feed makes them high in inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids—actually increases levels of inflammation in its consumers. And these inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids reduce the beneficial health impacts of a farmed salmon’s omega-3s. In addition, farmed salmon are fed fish meal, the ubiquitous corn and soy, and are often artificially colored with added synthetic pigments to mask their naturally occurring, unappetizing pale gray color. By contrast, wild salmon eat an all-natural marine diet rich in krill and shrimp, which are rich in the carotenoid astaxanthin. It is astaxanthin that gives wild salmon their beautiful color, which ranges from pink to orange to red across the various species. Farmed salmon are fed a steady diet of antibiotics to grow, unlike wild salmon. Finally, the fish meal and fish oils fed to farmed salmon have a direct impact on levels of PCB (polychlorinated biphenyl, an industrial by-product that has been identified as a probable carcinogen in humans).
