National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)
Federal institute that is part of the National Institutes of Health, the biomedical research arm of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The mission of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) is to ensure that every person is born healthy and wanted, that women suffer no harmful effects from the reproductive process, and that all children have the chance to fulfill their potential for a healthy and productive life, free of disease or disability.
NICHD was created by Congress in 1962 and supports and conducts research on topics related to the health of children, adults, families, and populations, including:
• reducing infant deaths
• improving the health of women and men
• understanding reproductive health
• learning about growth and development
• examining birth defects and mental retardation
• enhancing involvement across the life span through medical rehabilitation research.
