Language Processing Disabilities
The most common type of LEARNING DISABILITY, this problem may cause children to have trouble with any aspect of language, such as:
• hearing words correctly
• remembering verbal material
• understanding the meaning of words
• communicating clearly
The child with this problem has trouble with the spoken word, which usually interferes with reading and writing when the child first starts school. This learning problem may range from mild to extremely severe—so difficult that the child may find that coping with reading and writing is like learning a foreign language. They may be slow in learning to speak and speak in brief sentences, and their memory for verbal directions is poor.
Many children with this problem may speak in a garbled fashion because their brains may have trouble sorting out the right sounds; these children may pronounce “elephant” as “efelunt.” They may have a poor grasp of grammar and trouble with word sequencing in a sentence and may confuse words that sound alike. These types of errors usually get worse if the children must speak in public or before an authority figure.
