International Rett Syndrome Association
A support group for parents of children with RETT SYNDROME, professionals, and others interested in Rett syndrome, a disorder affecting girls who seem normal up until ages seven months to 18 months, when autistic-like withdrawal sets in. Although this symptom eases in time, higher brain functions continue to deteriorate, leading to severe MENTAL RETARDATION.
The association provides support to parents, encourages research, collects and disseminates information, helps identify Rett syndrome patients, and conducts activities aimed at the prevention, treatment, and eventual eradication of the condition.
Founded in 1985, the association has 1,500 members and publishes a quarterly newsletter and informational brochures.
