“If getting thinner is good, getting very thin must be even better.”

The best goal is to reduce weight into the healthy weight range, which is quite broad and typically spans at least 20 to 40 pounds. For most health benefits, there is no real evidence that losing so much that you are near the bottom of the healthy weight range is any better than being near the top of the healthy weight
range.

For example, Jim is 5’9″ tall and weighs 155 pounds, for a BMI of 23. According to the healthy weight range for his height, he could lose 27 pounds, lowering his weight to 128, which would give him a BMI of 19. It is best to find a comfortable and sustainable weight within the healthy weight range, if possible.

Keep in mind, though, that even if you can’t get into the healthy weight range, losing smaller amounts of weight can carry significant health benefits.
